Walmart is closing tech hubs. What does that

In March 2022, Walmart said it would expand its Global Tech enterprise with new hubs in Atlanta and Toronto and add thousands of new jobs companywide.

Less than a year after announcing a new technology hub in Atlanta, retail giant Walmart Inc. says it will shutter three of its other U.S. tech hubs and require those workers to relocate or work remote.
Walmart (NYSE: WMT) will close tech hubs in Austin, Texas; Carlsbad, California; and Portland, Oregon, the Wall Street Journal first reported, citing an internal memo from Suresh Kumar, Walmart’s global chief technology officer. The retailer will also require all its tech workers to return to the office at least two days per week, according to the news outlet.
Walmart is the latest company to announce tech cuts as the industry tries to navigate economic uncertainty. The Atlanta offices of Google, Microsoft and Twitter have posted layoffs, as well as local tech companies such as OneTrust. Microsoft also said this month it would pause its massive Westside Atlanta campus, which could support up to 15,000 workers.
Despite Walmart’s planned closures, its Atlanta tech hub remains part of the retailer’s “location strategy,” a company spokesperson told Atlanta Business Chronicle.
“We’ve made the decision to focus our tech team’s presence within select locations,” the Walmart statement said.
Walmart is requiring tech workers to relocate if they want to keep their jobs, according to WSJ. If Atlanta remains a Walmart tech hub, that could mean more Walmart workers relocating to the city.
In March 2022, Walmart said it would expand its Global Tech enterprise with new hubs in Atlanta and Toronto and add thousands of new jobs companywide. Few details were released about the Atlanta location or how many people it would employ.
At the time, Walmart said its first round of hiring would include 140 full-time jobs in cybersecurity, software development and data science, among other fields.
It’s still unclear where Walmart will plant its Atlanta tech hub. A company spokesperson said an opening date hasn’t been publicly shared and didn’t offer any details on the location.
Its recently established hub in the Seattle area also is safe and could even gain more employees if affected workers relocate, the Puget Sound Business Journal reported.
“It is important to note that this is a location strategy — and one that Seattle remains a part of,” a Walmart spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
The company also offered employees affected by the closures a few options. Some could be relocated while others would be allowed to work fully remote. If employees choose to leave, they’ll be given severance pay.
Walmart, which refers to its local office as its Seattle hub, actually keeps its office in downtown Bellevue. Last year, the company subleased 20,000 square feet from Smartsheet in the Bellevue Place building.
As of 2022, Walmart had more than 200 global tech employees based in the Puget Sound region. The company declined to say whether that headcount was still accurate.
